Hatteras Island, North Carolina

The Cape Hatteras National Seashore is home to some of the most historic and environmentally unique real estate in the world, with some of the Outer Banks' more iconic attractions including the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound, the island offers breathtaking views and a laid-back, quiet pace of life. Hatteras Island includes the villages of Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village.

History
Europeans began settling on the island of Hatteras in the 1700's. Kinnakeet (now Avon) was the first area to be colonized. The waters off the coast of Cape Hatteras were nicknamed "the Graveyard of the Atlantic," because of the many shipwrecks that happened off of Hatteras Island during the 18th and 19th centuries. Over the past several centuries the island has undergone many physical changes as it has weathered countless storms and hurricanes.
